5 common workplace hazards and how to avoid them

Here are five common workplace hazards along with strategies to avoid them:

  1. Slips, Trips, and Falls

- Hazards: Wet or slippery floors, uneven surfaces, cluttered walkways, inadequate lighting.

- Prevention:

  - Keep walkways clear of obstacles and spills.

  - Use non-slip mats and rugs in areas prone to moisture.

  - Ensure proper lighting, especially in stairways and corridors.

  - Encourage employees to wear appropriate footwear with good traction.

  1. Ergonomic Hazards

- Hazards: Poor posture, repetitive motions, awkward positioning, inadequate workstation setup.

- Prevention:

  - Provide ergonomic furniture and equipment tailored to individual needs (e.g., adjustable chairs, ergonomic keyboards).

  - Encourage regular breaks to stretch and change positions.

  - Train employees on proper lifting techniques and workstation ergonomics.

  - Conduct ergonomic assessments and make necessary adjustments to workstations.

  1. Hazardous Chemicals

- Hazards: Exposure to toxic substances, corrosive materials, flammable liquids.

- Prevention:

  - Store chemicals properly in labeled containers and cabinets.
